Block walls

This is a block wall ‘browned out’ with portland cement, then colored with exterior stucco. It has two issues: First the different suction of the portland cement over the block verses over the block joints is apparent by the horizontal discoloration on the wall. Second, water running down the block joints from the coping is marked by vertical discoloration of the wall. To avoid this outcome make sure the proper thickness of cement plaster is applied to the wall. In addition it may be helpful to seal the block wall before the application of the plaster or the wall has to be painted after the exterior stucco has been applied. In addition an alternative to portland cement must be used to replace the coping grout or - the grout must be sealed. At minimum the coping and joints should be cleaned periodically to reduce staining from rain washing the accumulated dirt down the wall.
