A Multi-Purpose Acrylic Primer designed for use within
Western Blended Products acrylic finish systems.

Description:
PAF Primer is a water-based acrylic primer formulated for use with Western Blended Products Premium Acrylic Finish systems.

The primer prepares cementitious and reinforced basecoat substrates for the application of acrylic finish coatings. The formulation improves the bond between the substrate and finish coat while reducing differential absorption that can lead to uneven color appearance.

PAF Primer is suitable for application over properly prepared cement plaster basecoats, Crack Resistant System (CRS) reinforced assemblies, EIFS reinforced basecoats, masonry substrates, and other approved substrates.

When used as part of the Western Blended Products acrylic finish system, PAF Primer may be tinted using the WBP PAF Color Pak system to help ensure proper color coordination with the selected finish coat.

Packaging:

  • Product is packaged in 5 Gallon / 65 lb pails

  • 27 pails per pallet

Premixed Color pails are available per regional production. PAF Color Pak units are packaged separately for use with PAF Plus materials.

Product Uses:
PAF Primer is used as a preparatory coating prior to the installation of acrylic finish coats within Western Blended Products systems.

The primer promotes uniform substrate absorption, improves adhesion of acrylic finishes, and enhances color consistency across the finished surface.

PAF Primer is commonly used beneath Western Blended Products acrylic finish coatings, including PAF Plus, PAF PW, PAF e2, and PAF Specialty Finishes.

Benefits:

  • Improves adhesion between substrate and finish coat

  • Promotes uniform color development of finish coatings

  • Reduces differential substrate absorption

  • Compatible with WBP acrylic finish systems

  • Ready-to-use formulation

Coverage:
Coverage varies depending on the texture and porosity of the substrate and the application techniques used.

  • Typical coverage ranges from approximately  1000–1500 ft² (93–140 m²) per pail.

Actual material usage may vary depending on jobsite conditions. The most reliable method for determining coverage is to apply the primer to a measured test area using the same substrate conditions and application techniques that will be used during project installation.

Mixing:
PAF Primer is supplied ready for use.

Prior to application, thoroughly mix the material using a slow-speed mechanical mixer until a uniform consistency is achieved.

Small amounts of clean potable water may be added if necessary to adjust workability. Do not over-dilute the material.

PAF Primer + PAF Color Pak Mixing:
When PAF Primer is used beneath WBP acrylic finishes such as PAF Plus, PAF PW, PAF e2, or PAF Specialty Finishes, Western Blended Products recommends tinting the primer to approximate the finish coat color.

Tinting is accomplished by incorporating WBP PAF Color Pak units into the pail.

Recommended procedure:

  1. Add two (2) full PAF Color Pak contents per batching instructions directly to the pail.

  2. Mechanically mix thoroughly to ensure complete pigment dispersion.

  3. Continue mixing until material color is uniform throughout the batch.

  4. Small amounts of potable water may be added if necessary to adjust workability not exceeding 8 oz per pail.

Tinting the primer in this manner helps ensure the primer color more closely matches the finish coat system, improving overall color uniformity and reducing the potential for substrate shadowing through the finish layer.

Application:
PAF Primer shall be applied over properly prepared and fully cured substrates.

Substrates must be clean, dry, structurally sound, and free of dust, dirt, efflorescence, oils, curing compounds, or other contaminants that may interfere with adhesion.

Apply primer uniformly by roller, brush, or approved spray equipment to achieve consistent substrate coverage.

Allow the primer to dry completely prior to installation of acrylic finish coatings.

Curing:
Drying time will vary depending on temperature, humidity, and substrate conditions.

Under normal drying conditions, allow the primer to dry thoroughly prior to application of finish coatings.

Protect freshly applied material from precipitation, freezing temperatures, and adverse environmental conditions until dry.

Limitations:

  • Not a waterproofing membrane.

  • Protect from freezing

  • Substrate must be clean, dry, and properly cured prior to application.

Do not apply to surfaces contaminated with oils, bond breakers, or other materials that may affect adhesion.

Do not apply when surface or ambient temperatures are at or below 40°F / 4.4°C or above 100°F / 38°C. Do not apply to surfaces that are contaminated with bond breakers, oils or other matter that may affect the performance of the product. Do not apply if conditions are expected to be above or below the specified temperature range within 24 hours of application. Do not add additional ingredients without specific written approval from an authorized manufacturer of Western Blended Products.

Storage:
PAF Primer shall be kept indoors or if stored outdoors shall be adequately covered to keep dry and stored off the ground.

Applicable Standards, Specifications and Codes:

  • 2024 International Building Code (IBC)

  • 2024 International Residential Code (IRC)

Product Properties:

  • Drying Time — Drying of the primer is dependent on air temperature, relative humidity, and substrate conditions.

  • Under average drying conditions [21 °C (70°F), 55% R.H.], allow a minimum of 24 hours prior to application of finish coatings.

  • Water Resistance: (ASTM D-2247)

  • Water Vapor Transmission: (ASTM E-96)

  • Surface Burning: (ASTM E-84)

Test results may vary depending on substrate conditions and film thickness.

Conditions of Use and Limited Warranty:

Specifications for this product are based on optimal environmental conditions (70°F ambient temperature with 50% humidity) for preparation, mixing, application and curing. Specification parameters may vary as environmental conditions change. Consult the product’s Safety Data Sheet or GHS Section located on the product package for hazard identification and first aid measures. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
